Creating a custom item type

If Portal's base item types do not provide enough flexibility, you can create additional custom item types to meet your requirements.

When you create a custom item type, you are not adding a new item to your page group. You are creating a new type of item in addition to the item types already defined.

After you create an item type, you must make the item type available to users of the page group. Users will not see the item type, and will not be able to add an item of that type, until the item type is added to the list of visible item types.

Note: You must be the page group administrator, the portal administrator, or have Manage privileges on All Page Groups to create a custom item type.

To create a custom item type:

  1. In the Navigator, click the Page Groups tab.

  2. Navigate to the following path:

Path: Page Groups > PageGroupDisplayName > Custom Types

where PageGroupDisplayName is the page group in which you want to create the custom item type.

Note: If you want to share this custom item type across multiple page groups, create it in the Shared Objects page group.

  3. In the Item Types row, click Create.

  4. In the Name field, enter a name for the custom item type. The name is used internally only.

Note: The name must be unique within the page group and the Shared Objects page group, is limited to 30 characters, and can contain only alphanumeric characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9) and the underscore character (_); no spaces or special characters.

  5. In the Display Name field, enter a descriptive name for the custom item type. The display name is used in the Navigator and in the create item Item Type list, so shorter display names are better.

Note: The display name is limited to 60 characters, and can contain any character, including spaces.

  6. In the Base Item Type list, choose the base item type from which to inherit attributes. If you want to inherit only the minimum number of attributes, choose <None>.

  7. Click Create.

A message is displayed at the top of the page to confirm that the custom item type has been created.

  8. You can now either click the custom item type link in the confirmation message to further define your new custom item type, create additional custom item types, or click Close to return to the Navigator.
