La asignatura se divide en cinco bloques temáticos (Study Blocks) cada uno de los cuales está dividido en unidades (Units).
STUDY BLOCK 1: English as an International Language
Unit 1: Historical survey of the rise of English as a communicative tool in an international context. Introduction to key terms.
Unit 2: English in a global context. Which English?
Unit 3: English as a tool for intercultural communication. English vs. multilingualism. The access paradox.
STUDY BLOCK 2: Communication and Culture
Unit 1: Survey of theories and definitions of culture from historical and interdisciplinary perspectives.
Unit 2: Intercultural communication today. Contemporary definitions of intercultural competence. Why do we need it?
STUDY BLOCK 3: Intercultural (Mis)communication
Unit 1: Historical overview of obstacles to intercultural communication, especially through Western racist and exclusionary theories and practices.
Unit 2: Philosophical origins of Western discriminatory ideologies. The development of gendered and racial stereotypes and prejudices. The practice of Othering.
STUDY BLOCK 4: Intercultural Communication and Literature (I)
Unit 1: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad (selected extracts): racist or anti-imperialist text?
Unit 2: A Passage to India by E. M.Forster (selected extracts): “We’re not pleasant in India, and we don’t intend to be pleasant”.
STUDY BLOCK 5: Intercultural Communication and Literature (II).
Unit 1: A selection of writings by African American poet Langston Hughes: to hear another language.
Unit 2: The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy (selected extracts): ‘english’ stops where la frontera begins.
