The course is structured in two parts. In its first half, the student should answer two questionnaires on the textbook (those at the end of each chapter).
The text book:
Adam Briggle & Carl Mitcham, Ethics and science. An Introduction, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2012
In the second part of the course you should write a book review (2500 words). We will discuss other reviews of the same book by other fellow students.
Ben Goldacre, Bad Science, London, Faber & Faber, 2010.
The deadlines for the first part are the following:
-First of the questionnaires: March 15th. Second questionnaire: April 15th.
Then you should prepare the book review. It should be 2500-3500 words long. The book review should follow the following format: the first part (about a third to a half of the overall extension) should sketch the book's main claims; the next, second part should discuss an evaluation of the book’s claims and arguments. Towards the end of the review you can attempt to draw some implications of the book’s theses and claims or you can add your own discussion of the problems dealt with by the book.
-Book review: May 15th.
Finally, you should post your review in a dedicated message board, provide comments on the reviews of at least two of your fellow students and engage in the subsequent discussion. The deadline for this last assignment is June 15th.
