In this years's edition of the course we will discuss the role of mechanisms and mechanistic explanation in the Philosophy of Science.
1. What concept of mechanism?
We will deal with recent conceptual syntheses of the notion of mechanism attempting to use unificatory framework across the sciences.
We will also deal with recent deflationary conceptual strategies that have tried to simplify the philosophical notions of mechanism, in order to correct what they think is a metaphysically inflated concept that as such does not match the scientific intuitions of any particular discipline.
2. Mechanisms in explanation and mechanisms in causal inference
In the second part of the course, we will deal with recent attempts to systematize the role of mechanisms in causal explanation and inference.
