This unit addresses language policies and language planning in educational contexts. In particular, it focuses on how language policies are designed and interpreted in schools. It also analyzes the impact of their implementation on educational processes and language learning in bilingual and multilingual communities and families.
This unit covers two of the main factors that could play a role in language policy, namely, identity and cultural awareness. Taking as a starting point multicultural and multilingual societies, this unit offers an overview of how languages can be accommodated in a language policy so as to build a cultural identity.
This unit provides an overview of language policies across European and non-European countries. Different language policy domains will be discussed, namely, corpus policy of a particular language, language status policy and foreign language policy. It also pays attention to minority language policies at various educational levels and the role played by alphabetization and promotion of literacy (for example, in aboriginal groups).
This unit is also concerned with the bi-directional relathionship between language policy and its assessment in multilingual and plurilingual contexts with examples taken from the USA, Canada and the Basque Country, among others.
This unit analyzes policy makers' design and implementtation of language policies in bilingual and multilingual educational contexts. Examples from multilingual countries will be studied as it is the case of the status planning and the language rights of South African languages or indigenous languages.
This unit provides insights into the educational model of CLIL implementation and the role that it plays in bilingual education. More specifically, it offers a comprehensive picture of CLIL programes and their contribution to raise language learning standards in bilingual and multilingual language policies.
