Chapter 1: Introduction to course and materials design. Problems caused by textbooks. Design of possible solutions. Characteristics of good materials; problems in making an inventory. Materials design and lesson planning. Testing versus teaching and human values in teaching materials. Neglected exercise types.
Chapter 2: Structural syllabuses, situational syllabuses, functional/notional syllabuses, task-based syllabuses, lexical syllabuses. Basic English and its problems. The General Service List. The Lexical Syllabus and the Collins Cobuild English Course.
Chapter 3: New technologies and course and materials design. Focus on accuracy. Swain’s pushed output hypothesis. Analysis of a Grammar Checker for students of EFL.
