TEACHING AND PROCESSING FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN COLLABORATIVE WORK ENVIRONMENTS

CONTENIDOS DE LA ASIGNATURA

These are the main contents of this subject, although some slight changes can be introduced depending on the interest and background of the students.

1. Working on the Internet ( Digital literacy, Information retrieval, bibliography management, the concept of working in collaboration). The aim of this unit is building the basis of working together (mainly in the cloud) and being able to find out the information that we need to train ourselves on specific areas of interest. We will learn how to use Mendeley to manage our own bibliographic database.

2. The use of wikis as a collaborative working space to deal with foreign languages. Different topics will lead us to the construction of new collaborative wikis each year. Group working is essential at this stage.

3. The use of blogs in a foreign language teaching & learning context. We part from the point that we already know how to edit a blog (with Blogger, mainly). Different online tutorials will show us how to edit a WordPress blog in collaboration, based on the contents worked in the previous unit. Group working will also be crucial in this unit.

4. Social networks applied to foreign languages learning. We will leave apart conventional and general Networks (e.g. Facebook) to focus on more academic or educational ones. We will find out how to use Twitter as a tool to teach and do research.

5. The use of web-based tools for monitoring and feedback retrieval in a foreign language context. We will learn how to retrieve information and feedback from most of the tools studied in this course.  This last unit will serve to demonstrate that the student has acquired all the contents described in the units above.

Each unit implies the reading of different up-to-date readings dealing with the topic deal, included in a tool studied at the beginning of the course, Mendeley. All the bibliography needed to complement this course will be gathered in a group set up for this aim.
