Creating a page template

Page templates enable you to enforce a standard layout and appearance for multiple pages.

NoteTo create a page template, you must have at least one of the following privileges:

You can only apply templates to standard pages or pages with a custom page type based on the standard page type.

To create a page template:

  1. In the Navigator, click Contents next to the page group in which you want to create the page template.

Tip: If you want to be able to use this page template in more than one page group, create it in the Shared Objects page group.

  2. Click Create in the Templates row.

  3. In the Name field, enter a name for the page template.

Note: The name is used internally and for direct access URLs, and must be unique within the page group and the Shared Objects page group. The name is limited to 40 characters and can contain only alphanumeric characters (A-Z, a-z, 0-9) and the underscore (_) character. Do not use spaces or other special characters.

  4. In the Display Name field, enter a descriptive name for the page template.

  5. (Optional) In the Description field, enter a description for the page template. The description, which is optional, is displayed only when you edit the page template. It does not appear to the user.

  6. Select Make Public to make this page template available for other users to apply to their own pages.

  7. In the Navigation Page For Banner list, choose a navigation page to use as a banner for the page template. The navigation page is added as a portlet to a region across the top of the page, so be sure to choose a navigation page that fits appropriately. If you do not want to include a banner across the top of the page template, choose <None> in this list.

Note: This list includes all the navigation pages in this page group and the shared objects page group that have been exposed as portlets.

  8. Click Next.

  9. Select Enable Pages To Use Different Style if you want page designers to be able to use a different style in pages based on this template.

If you want to enforce a particular style on all pages based on this template, do not select this check box.

  10. In the Style list, choose the style that you want to apply to pages based on this template.

The Preview section provides an example of the colors and fonts used in the chosen style.

  11. Click Next.

  12. Select Enable Pages To Have Different Access if you want page designers to be able to specify different access privileges on pages based on this template.

If you want to enforce a particular set of access privileges on all pages based on this template, do not select this check box.

  13. (Optional) Select Display Page To Public Users if you want everyone, including users who are not logged into the portal, to be able to view pages based on this template.

  14. (Optional) Select Enable Item Level Security if you want content contributors to be able to specify access privileges on individual items in pages based on this template. If you do not select this check box, item privileges are inherited from the pages on which the items appear. For more information, see What is Item Level Security?.

  15. To explicitly grant privileges to specific users or groups:

    1. In the Grantee field, enter the name of the user or group that you want to allow to access pages based on this template.

Tip: If you are not sure of the name of the user or group, click Browse Users (for users) or Browse Groups (for groups), and select from the list provided.

    2. In the list, choose a privilege level.

Note: Just because one privilege appears before another in the list does not mean that the privilege implies all other privileges below it. For more information, see Page privileges.

    3. Click Add.

Tip: If you want to grant a user or group multiple privileges, for example Manage Content and Manage Style, add the user or group separately for each privilege.

Note that when you set privileges on a template, those privileges apply to pages based on the template, not the template itself. To affect the page template, one must have the Manage Templates page group privilege.

  16. Click Finish to create the page template and return to the Navigator.
